Next I was off to internet to find out more about this particular DVD player. It took me whole 15 minutes of googling to find the Panasonic Service Manual which was very well written. It documented the service process, with block diagrams, full schematics, PCB layouts and what not.
Very good engineering indeed, Panasonic. I also found this informative video detailing a similar capacitor repair. Also thanks for that advice. Armed with this information, I made an ambitious list of 14 capacitors to be replaced. Then I went to my trusted supplier Partco who are the finnish Farnell distributor.
I decided to get Rubycon replacement capacitors, because they have a good reputation for durability. I send my order to Partco and they took only about a week to deliver all of them. I was very satisfied with this as Rubycon caps used to be more difficult to obtain.
Price was very reasonable, about 25 euros total. I de-soldered the two bulged caps first. This was the point when I decided to take a shortcut and only replace these two. I admit, I got lazy and the promise of quick-and-dirty solution drove me to the low hanging fruits.
So I only soldered the two caps in. I am sure I will regret this next year when the other old caps start to go bad. Quick testing, while being extra careful with live electricity. I measured the voltages coming out of the power supply, they seemed ok. Without this information, program-based recordings cannot be made. However, recordings can still be set manually. Using this connection provides the better picture quality.

UIf necessary, use the double sided adhesive tape included to secure the IR Blaster to a flat surface. WIf you peel off the adhesive tape, the surface may become damaged.

It does not turn off automatically. Our only complaint with this is that it's placed exactly where you'd expect the disc eject button to be -- more than once in our testing we idly jabbed at it to get a disc back, which naturally didn't work out too well. One unique feature of the remote is that it features a scroll wheel for rapid picture seeking; that's something we haven't seen a lot of since the days of VHS.
