If that doesn't help you might download the latest drivers from the internet for each unrecognised device, then when the system says that it can't find the appropriate drivers tell it specifically to look where you have those drivers stored.
Use the Vista drivers only, as they are the only ones that I have been successful in using with a similar installation of the RTM - on the positive side I have only found one USB device that does not mount properly when I use the procedure I suggested, it is a secure encrypted memory stick that I bought back in the days of XP.
Monday, August 31, AM. I did check my BIOS settings. I'm fairly sure they are correct. The last four, I really have no idea what they do. They are all set at the fail-safe default setting. The BIOS is also the latest available. Tuesday, September 1, AM. I did try swapping ports. This issue appears to be insensitive to that. Also, all the USB controllers appear to be working properly within the device manager.
I agree that forcing the drivers might be a solution, however this didn't really work out. Some things, like USB headsets, just don't have specific drivers as I could find. My mouse did have drivers supposedly in the latest Intellipoint rollout but forcing them did not work. Paradoxically, its the two things I think this would work for ipod, digital camera that already work ok.
I completed these two steps. One note, i could not locate any file 'infcacha. The troubleshooter did not resolve my issue but detected two problems: 1. Unknown Device is not working properly 2. Hello, When you get "USB device not recognized", that generally means that the device itself is in a bad state. The newer problems you mention in your first post do make it sound more like a hardware issue. Want to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7?

Please note that there issues with Windows 7 and nforce chipsets on some motherboards, causing a lot of USB issues In my case Windows 7 x64 and not possible to copy files larger than mb to USB drives, no possibility to sync iPod and lastly USB devices that I disconnect are not recognized when I reconnect them only after a reboot.
